Introduction

I hope you’ve heard about the movie wicked, because it has flown up, and really made a mark in the theater industry. The total gross earnings of Wicked worldwide are $541.1 million dollars worldwide, and as it should be, as the broadway adaptation movie is one of the best movies i’ve seen on screen.

The Story

The movie revolves around the backstory of the wicked witch of the west, as seen in the wizard of oz, Elphaba, who we learn early in the movie was born green, and Glinda, who is the good witch of the north in the wizard of oz.

At first, they don’t seem to get along, but later in the movie, they become best friends. It shows how close they’ve gotten, other problems in the magical world of Oz, and how the wicked witch of the west may not be as bad as she had been portrayed in the wizard of oz movie.

I love wicked, as it shows that villains are people (or creatures) too, and have feelings that go beyond world domination, and sometimes they aren’t villains, but really someone that has been forced into that role.

Elphaba and Glinda

  • Elphaba: I really liked Elphaba, because apart from the obvious reasons (being green, having magic,), she’s pretty close to a normal human being. She may not admit it, but she wants to be accepted by her community. Elphaba is also different, because she doesn’t bat an eye to give up all of that to help people in need, and change the world. So sure, she wants to be accepted, but she looks out for other people before she starts thinking about herself.
  • Glinda: I liked Glinda because although she might seem as your average popular girl, she’s really much more than that. She really cares for people, (as seen in the party scene), and she hated to see Elphaba being ridiculed like that. I think that the growth she made in the movie, while it wasn’t highlighted, was great, as Elphaba and her help eachother grow in different ways.

Songs in wicked

The songs in Wicked were a mix of all emotions, maybe all at once. Sometimes, they could lighten up the mood, other times, you felt emotion just by hearing the actors sing.  My favorite song was “What is this feeling?”  because it was one of the lighter songs, and the rhythm really stuck to me.

The music is really important to the story, because not only does it tell a story, you might catch yourself nodding and singing along to the tones.

Sets and Scenes

The magic in the movie looked so out of this world, and it was like they had handpicked the sets out of my imagination, right onto the movie. My favorite part was when they were in the emerald city, in the town, just seeing people setting up stalls, it just felt like it was the actual emerald city.

What I Liked the Most

The best part of the movie for me was when Glinda started doing Elphaba’s dance with her, when she saw that what she had done by giving her the hat had really made other people make fun of her for it, and when she saw Elphaba’s tears, she made an example to join her.

What I liked most: cont.

It was really the start of a friendship that would resonate with you, and I thought it was sweet that Glinda really felt bad for what she had done to Elphaba, and wanted to undo that. Even though she couldn’t, she did the second best thing. She made a friend.

Sad Scenes

I think Wicked did a great job in the sad scenes, as the part where the monkey grew wings really made me shudder in my seat. Even though it wasn’t really, I really felt bad for the monkey, and Elphaba, who watched in horror as it squirmed on the ground, and it just goes to show how powerful this movie can be.

Who Should Watch It?

I think this movie is great for kids and adults alike, mainly for those who have a big imagination, as Wicked is all that and some more. The storyline is captivating, and the scenes are just ethereal to me, and it’s something that I’d never think would ever exist in real life.

My Rating

I give Wicked 5 stars, because of all the reasons above, and also because of the actors that executed all of this. Wicked absolutely smashed it out of the park with the casting. I think Ariana Grande was perfect for the role of Glinda, and Crystina Erivo for Elphaba. Their voices are so powerful in the movie, and compliment each other in a way that can’t be replaced.

Final Thoughts

Wicked is a movie that will make you laugh, sing, and maybe even cry. It’s a story that highlights a blossoming friendship and whimsical magic. It’s truly an experience that you don’t easily forget about.
